THIS SOFTWARE UNDER CONSTRUCTION
At first this
page will be for interested parties to track the progress of the new software's
development and possibly to submit suggestions that apply to the new software. When beta
testing is started then you will be able to download updates from this page. Please
remember that without your registration code information, downloading these updates will
be useless.
History & Info
STAGE ONE - Getting started January 5th, 1998 -Actual start of framework
coding, dusting off the notes and database fields information gathered last summer when
the project was first started. Block diagram versions of structure for actual use by end
users, and for update and tracking of changes from the server side software.
STAGE TWO - WORKING OUT BASIC DATA SCREENS - January 11th, 1998 -Framework coding at
roughly 50%, starting to add in rough menu structures, hooks for help menus and notes,
Beginning registration coding, some notes on experimental data encryption from client to
server and back primarily to improve transfer/update times, but also to protect system
from un-authorized changes or use.
January 20th, 1998 - Working database for test purposes is
roughed out, some tracking information fields added to allow better tracking records of
users activity on the main database. Rough setup of splash screen, about screen, and a
hardware and memory information screen for client side information. Working with interbase
server for simulation of remote database connectivity started.
February 1st, 1998 - More review of details on reports that
can identify each office and/or agent using a zone on report forms for company logo,
picture etc. Setup database fields to allow such info to be carried on main server system,
allowing update of one system to be reflected in all that apply. Report formats database
ideas which allow updates of all reports generic forms to be done remotely and
automatically being tried. Working properties database is being refined further. Started
leaving spaces for picture format on those that submit photo data on listings. Still
thinking of good name for program, best so far is REAL, Real Estate Activity &
Listing - not too catchy... any suggestions??
STAGE THREE - WORKING ON GLUE, ADD-INS, HELP, ETC - February 13th, 1998 - Rough reports shaping
up, will do more when beta starts up. Startup screen, first menu versions in place.
Automatic housekeeping routines started. Basic data screens shaping up more, with
emphasis on users layout, may use two versions of data view and entry depending on
pictures being present or not. Work started on ways to auto publish to a web site,
listings that you select. Started fleshing out the help pages, early outlines for manual,
first looks on setup and installation routines for users side.
February 25th, 1998 - Work so far has been primarily in
Delphi 3 with a target of Windows95 or 98, so now I start parallel work testing components
to work in a 16bit environment, to allow a Windows3.1 version to be compiled. Work on
communications routines to handle the automatic setup, detection of modem, connect to
server, etc now goes into a higher priority. Also doing some tests of a network server
setup version to allow faster work, un-attended updates and such - probably will not use
in first release. More work on menu functions, looking at bug with data indexing causing
slow response in some higher search levels.
STAGE FOUR - Getting ready for Beta Testing - March 8th, 1998 - Have rough version of 32 bit
product ready to start with beta testers. Still have not heard from board which two lucky
users will be the first. More work on setup software, trying for very easy setup, which
could work on either Win3.1 or 95/98 and might be CD-ROM ready when final versions are
out. Need sample logo files from several offices to help work in 'personalized' reports.
Can do more when beta starts up.
STAGE FIVE - CONVERTING - April 18th, 1998 - Have contacted two users
within the group on my own for beta test candidates. Will be installing one when parts for
update of one of their PCs are in, still waiting for return from the other. Started
looking into the necessary work to convert existing data from the currently used system to
the newer format. Hope to have working version of that program together in the next 2
weeks to allow moving all existing data to the new system as needed so that when the
system is adopted across the entire group no extra work will be spent moving listings.
(May also setup program to move either way, so new entries in the Windows versions could
be transferred to older system if needed to keep older users in sync.)
DEVELOPMENT HALTED - Attended scheduled key meeting to show program and install beta version at
Gary Britt's office. After waiting outside his office 25 minutes past the appointment time
with no meeting, I asked that he (who was inside his office throughout this time) contact
me to reschedule, but having not heard from him the program development was halted. The
contract as I wrote it requires interaction and teamwork and I prefer to work with those
who wish to be an active part in shaping the programs I write to fit their needs and be
truly effective.
