THIS AREA UNDER RE-CONSTRUCTION
- I am currently working to put all of the tech help papers online for free so
that more people can benefit from them. (they have previously been available for
a small fee - typically 2 to 5 dollars).
Some of them are being updated to better fit the changing of the subjects. Please check back later to get information on each tech paper if the ones you are interested in are not online presently - or contact me thru the other channels like Email, BBS, telephone, etc. Thanks!
Donations are still appreciated of course, so if you find that the information here helps you feel free to send a few bucks this way using the PAYPAL link below to help support the work and webspace. More donations will allow more to be done here.
Mike says "Some people have on occasion video taped or made voice recordings of my help sessions. I wish they would let me know so I could have my hair done better <grin>. Here are some practical and better edited versions of my blathering, and even by today's standards the prices are reasonable. The charge is mainly to allow me to keep the idea alive and updated more frequently. While these are not thesis quality, most do go beyond the single paragraph devoted to some setups in your computer motherboard manual... ........ what do you mean you didn't get a manual?"

Just like tuning an engine on a car - there are tune-up tips and techniques that can improve your systems hard disk performance and we all know (or should) that the total system performance is very much dependant on how your drive works in relation to the rest of the system. In this tech paper Mike goes beyond the usual "DEFRAG YOUR DISK OFTEN" and talks about how you can improve your drive performance and overall system performance with tips and tricks for various operating systems. As the primary use of your system can affect what tricks and adjustments work best, Mike goes into some more specific tips for different users needs to help you get more from your computer.

While most users these days are using IDE or EIDE interfaces, there are other interfaces that may be needed in your case if you go beyond the basic computer setup. In this tech paper Mike goes into some basic choices of drive interface and combinations of them on a single system. Discussed here are ideas to help you choose when improving your system or building a new one, as well as some ideas on how to get the most from EIDE and IDE drives with better interfaces. If this tech paper helps improve your system use even a few percent, it will pay for itself many times over in saved time in just a few months. Also noteworthy here is that the author covers some vintage speed tips and tricks for the older ST-506 interfaces with MFM and RLL harddrives, as well as SCSI, EIDE, IDE and ESDI.

Just because it came with your system and it has no adjustments does not mean you can't tweak a CD Rom drive. Mike shares his knowledge of tune-up and tweaks for CD drives in this tech paper. There are methods to optimize performance depending on how you use the drive and this short paper covers the more common with some examples of how to do them.

Ok, so we use them everyday and think we know enough about them - but do we? In this entry-mid level tech paper Mike discusses some of the things we know and what is behind them, and how to be sure your modem is set up properly. Some thought toward choosing modems based on your needs is also brought out on paper.
